Sofia Maldonado's 42nd Street Mural: Women Fighting To Get Ahead

A giant mural created by visual artist SOFIA MALDONADO is now on display on 42nd Street, between Broadway and 8th Avenue. Maldonado's colorful work features a cast of Afro-Caribbean Latinas from Harlem, Brooklyn and other boroughs that "tourists and even many New Yorkers don't really go to." The mural depicts Latin women fighting to get ahead. Born to a Cuban mother and a Puerto Rican father, Maldonado moved to New York 4 years ago to pursue a master's degree at Pratt Institute.

This picture is not degrading. There are women out there that dont fit the bill of what a "normal woman" should be in america. This mural shows that there are other women that apart this way and still are strong and proud and should be treat just like any other person.

everyone should just look at some of her past work. google sofia maldonado and you will find some of her work. las nenas looked more or less like that. not only that but I just dont see how it's so degrading. it's her work, i personally love it. her style is unique, using very organic forms and bright colors. and honestly, she's a hispanic woman too. so everyone should just calm down and leave her and the mural alone. all people know how to do today is critizice and make things a bigger deal than they are. go worry about worse things happening in new york that people should be putting their focus on

I think she is a tremendous artist. The colors she uses, the facial expressions - I've met and probably gone out with a few of her models. All kidding aside, she is good at catching the "attitude". I'll be sharing your site and keep doin' watcha' doin'.
