East West Gate: Yuyu Yang's Lifescape Sculpture

One of the best known outdoor sculptures of artist YUYU YANG (1926-1997) is this stainless steel artwork called EAST WEST GATE. It was installed in front of the Orient Overseas Building located at 88 Pine Street in Lower Manhattan's Wall Street Plaza in 1973. Yang used stainless steel to create mirror-like surfaces which reflect their environment. Yang commented on his own artwork: "My sculptures in general, and stainless steel sculptures in particular, harmonize man and his environment spiritually, mentally and physically; this is why I call my sculptures lifescapes instead of environmental sculptures."
