TODAY SHOW, America's Favorite Morning TV Program Turns 60

Today is the 60th anniversary of the TODAY SHOW on NBC. It was on January 13, 1952 that Dave Garroway kicked off the very first "Today" episode, and the show has never left. It is now the fifth-longest-running American television show of all time. In today's program, Today's past anchors gathered including Hugh Downs, Barbara Walters, Jim Hartz, Tom Brokaw, Jane Pauley, Bryant Gumbel, Willard Scott, Deborah Norville, Katie Couric, and Meredith Vieira all gathered in Studio 1A to share their stories.  "I look at 60 years as a major accomplishment, something we'll be able to tell our children about," current host Matt Lauer said in a video recap of Today's legacy. And to drive home just how much has been accomplished -- and how things have changed -- over that six-decade span, the show's anchors, both past and present, gathered to reminisce about their Today experiences." Several former Today Girls also joined the broadcast, including Florence Henderson, Estelle Parsons, Lee Meriwether, Robbin Bain Gaudieri and Beryl Pfizer. Pictured above are scenes from this morning's show including shot-through-the-glass photos of past Today show anchors.

Thousands of Fans Go Gaga Over LADY GAGA at the Rockefeller Plaza

The Phenomenon That Is Lady Gaga (Video From NBC)

Videos from NBC
Lady Gaga made an appearance on NBC's Today Show this morning, and also performed for an estimated twenty thousand fans in and around Rockefeller Plaza for the morning show's outdoor Toyota Summer Concert Series. Wearing an all-white ensemble, the singer started her set with the classic Gershwin ballad 'Someone to Watch Over Me,' then transitioned into her hit 'Bad Romance.' In an intreview with Today Show hosts, Ann Curry and Meredith Vieira, the most popular person on Facebook said, "There are certainly things that are difficult to deal with, but the kind of fame that I cherish is the relationship I have with my fans." She also performed 'You and I,' a brand new song from her upcoming record. The artist played the soulful rock ballad and climbed atop the piano for the finale of the song. Gaga also performed 'Alejandro' and 'Teeth.'
Thousands of young fans camped outside the Today Show studio beginning more than 24 hours prior to the morning program. Lady Gaga sent out pizza and water to camped out fans last night. She is a native New Yorker who is "just trying to change the world, one sequin at a time."

BARRY MANILOW sings the 80's hits on the TODAY SHOW

Earlier this morning, I made these images from the TODAY SHOW concert series at Rockefeller Plaza outside the NBC studio featuring BARRY MANILOW who sang some pop songs from the '80s. Barry Manilow (born June 17, 1943) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, arranger, producer and conductor, best known for such recordings as "I Write the Songs, Mandy, Weekend in New England and Copacabana." This morning's TODAY SHOW program was hosted by DAVID GREGORY, AMY ROBACH and PETER ALEXANDER.
From Manilow's official website:
"Among the few things one can count on in life: the taste of McDonald's cheeseburgers, "I Love Lucy" reruns are still funny—and Barry Manilow never wearing out his welcome at the top of the charts", Billboard Magazine.
With worldwide sales of more than 75 million records, Barry Manilow’s success is a benchmark in popular music. His concerts and night-club performances sell out instantly. He is ranked as the top Adult Contemporary chart artist of all time, according to R&R (Radio&Records) and Billboard magazines. Rolling Stone crowned him “a giant among entertainers… the showman of our generation,” and Frank Sinatra summed up Manilow best when Ol’ Blue Eyes told the British press, “He’s next.”
Manilow calls Las Vegas his home away from home where he performs to sell-out crowds at the Las Vegas Hilton, which he has done for three years now. He opened in 2005 with huge success with Manilow: Music and Passion and recently, changed things up and has taken the show to next level. ULTIMATE MANILOW: The Hits opened in September of 2008 to rave reviews, calling it ‘the perfect mix of Manilow’s hits’ (Vegas.com) where Manilow opens up his expansive catalog of hits and expertly takes us on a journey that lets us know that ‘This One’s for You.’
Manilow has given the gift of collections in the best-selling series of tributes to popular music. RIAA platinum The Greatest Songs Of The Fifties released January 31, 2006, which incidentally became his first #1 debut on the Billboard 200 album chart and first #1 album since the 1977 triple-platinum double-LP Barry Manilow/Live; RIAA platinum The Greatest Songs Of The Sixties released October 31, 2006, entering the chart at #2 and was the all-time highest first sales week debut chart entry of Manilow’s career. With those two albums, Manilow became the first artist since 1981 to have two albums in the top two positions in one calendar year on the Billboard chart. Next came The Greatest Songs Of The Seventies, released September 18, 2007, entering the Billboard charts at #4, making The Greatest Songs of the Seventies Manilow’s 33rd charting album, his 11th Top 10 and his 10th Top 10 debut and the only artist to have three Top four debuts on the Billboard 200 chart in two years.
Recently, Manilow's mellow music is now the cornerstone of a bizarre but apparently effective new plan of justice masterminded by Colorado judge Paul Sacco. Judge Sacco is punishing people who land in court for noise violations (blasting their stereos, rehearsing with bands, hosting raging parties) by sentencing then to an hour-long, high-volume Barry Manilow listening session. For most violators who wind up in Sacco's courtroom, it's a cruel and unusual punishment indeed. And just in case any of the offenders emerge from this experience with a new appreciation for Manilow, it seems law officials take surveys after each punishing session. That way, if any of the lawbreakers actually like a particular Barry song, that song is removed from the court-ordered playlist.

AMERICAN IDOLatry: David Cook and David Archuleta on NBC's TODAY SHOW

The crowds packed the Rockefeller Plaza outside NBC's Today Show studio last May 29 to get a glimpse of this year's American Idol winner David Cook and runner-up David Archuleta. The TODAY SHOW on NBC

NBC's Studio 1A has become a popular tourist destination in Rockefeller Center. It is home to the TODAY SHOW, the highest rated TV morning news and talk show in America. The show has become an "institution," and beginning September 10, a fourth hour will be added. Above is a photo taken last September 5th showing anchors MEREDITH VIEIRA and MATT LAUER and weatherman AL ROKER outside the studio. Not in the photo is news anchor ANN CURRY. The show airs weekday mornings on the NBC television network. The Today Show was created by Pat Weaver, the father of actress Sigourney Weaver. The show premiered on January 14, 1952. It was the first of its genre, spawning similar morning news and entertainment television programs across the country and around the world. The show is also the third-longest running American television series, behind NBC's Meet The Press. The show broadcasts from Studio 1A just across the street from NBC headquarters at the GE Building. The studio is located right next to the street and many times the hosts do the weather, concerts or other show segments from outside. Tourists usually bring signs or posters when they visit the fenced area outside the studio for a chance to be on television or just to enjoy the free mini concert during the summer.
