St. Joseph's Church In Brooklyn Is A Newly Minted Cathedral

St. Joseph's Church, the largest Catholic church in Brooklyn has been given Cathedral status recently. Pope Emeritus Benedict granted the petition by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio just before the pope resigned. The church has a seating capacity of 1,500, and will now serve as the main venue for significant events. St. Joseph's was built in 1850 to serve the area's large immigrant community. St. James in downtown Brooklyn is the only other cathedral in the borough.
