As the massive hurricane "Irene" approaches the New York City area, transit systems, businesses, airports and Broadway shows have shut down today. These images were taken this afternoon as the city prepares for the hurricane. Mayor Michael Bloomberg also ordered an unprecedented mass evacuation of residents in low-lying areas. The closure of America's biggest subway system is the first time ever resulting from a natural disaster.

As a life long New Yorker. (Brooklyn), I am enjoying looking through your blog. Your photos are wonderful! Thank goodness the hurricane did not do the amount of damage as was feared!
