Shepard Fairey Mural Created In Collaboration With NYC Kids On Display At World Financial Center

On May 2, 2010 contemporary artist, graphic designer and illustrator, Shepard Fairey guided over 100 teens from The CityKids Foundation through his artistic process to create a 40-foot mural as an expression of the collective power of young people to change the world. Accompanying the new mural is an ongoing exhibit of Fairey's artwork at the World Financial Center Courtyard Gallery. The exhibit features some of Fairey’s iconic images, consisting of twelve 8’x4’ panels that depict four socially pressing issues: youth violence, education, environmental protection and human rights. The exhibit runs from September 28 - October 17, 2010 (12 noon - 4 PM daily) at the World Financial Center Courtyard Gallery.

Fairey became widely known during the 2008 U.S. presidential election, specifically for his Barack Obama "HOPE" poster. The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston calls him one of today's best known and most influential street artists. His work is included in the collections at The Smithsonian, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

SHEPARD FAIREY's Mural on Houston and Bowery

Artist SHEPARD FAIREY, probably best known for his Barack Obama "Hope" poster, installed this MAY DAY mural at the corner of Houston and Bowery. The mural is a promotion for MAY DAY, Fairey's show at Deitch Projects. The mural is a critique of everything from global warming to the two-party system in Washington. The wall on Houston and Bowery was made famous by KEITH HARING in the early '80's.

Shepard Fairey, the street artist behind the President Obama "Hope" picture, created a live art installation in front of the Levi's Store in Times Square earlier this evening. The unveiling of the new work of public art commemorated the launch of the new Obey x Levi's collection of street inspired styles for men. Poster signing also followed after the installation. I captured these images of Mr. Fairey during the live art installation.

Frank Shepard Fairey (born February 15, 1970 in Charleston, South Carolina) is a contemporary artist, graphic designer and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene and became known initially for his "André the Giant Has a Posse" sticker campaign. The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston calls him one of today's best known and most influential street artists. Mr. Fairey's portrait of President Barack Obama has been acquired by the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. The large-scale, mixed media stenciled collage was the central portrait image for the Obama campaign. His technique for adapting borrowed imagery for this piece was controversial and has been criticized by many. During the Levi's event in Times Square, Mr. Fairey was treated like a rock star by his admirers, autograph seekers and press photographers.
