An American Flag at Rockefeller Center flies at half staff in tribute to victims of the deadly mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado. Early Friday morning, 24-year-old James Eagan Holmes allegedly opened fire on theater-goers attending a midnight premiere of the summer blockbuster "The Dark Knight Rises," killing at least 12 and wounding 59, according to police.

MEMORIAL DAY: Honoring American Casualties of War

At the Rockefeller Center, the lone American flag flies at half-staff to mark today's observance of MEMORIAL DAY. Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

Remembering TIM RUSSERT

A flag flew at half-staff at Rockefeller Center yesterday in honor of TIM RUSSERT who passed away unexpectedly last Friday. Mr. Russert was the moderator of NBC's MEET THE PRESS and Washington Bureau Chief. Mr. Russert had led “Meet the Press,” the oldest continuous program on television, since 1991, and made the program the premier place for newsmakers and political candidates to make their case to the nation. I took this photo yesterday, Sunday near the NBC studio at Rockefeller Center. And if it's Sunday, it's "Meet the Press" with Tim Russert. Tim Russert's chair was empty on the program yesterday, when Tom Brokaw led a warm tribute to the beloved newsman.
