Former Mayor Edward I. Koch was remembered today as the quintessential New Yorker at Temple Emmanu-El, a Manhattan synagogue where hundreds gathered to pay their final respects before he was laid to rest at Trinity Cemetery. The three-term mayor died last Friday of heart congestive heart failure at the New York Presbyterian/Columbia hospital.
“No mayor, I think, has ever embodied the spirit of New York City like he did,” Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg told the mourners, “and I don’t think anyone ever will. Tough and loud, brash and irreverent, full of humor and chutzpah — he was our city’s quintessential mayor.”
