Folly 2013: Tree Wood and Other Sculptures at Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, Queens

Socrates Sculpture Park is a park in Long Island City, Queens specifically dedicated to exhibiting large-scale sculpture and multi-media installations in a unique outdoor environment that encourages strong interaction between artists, artworks and visitors. The park used to be an abandoned riverside landfill and illegal dumpsite. In 1986, a group of artists and community members, under the leadership of artist Mark di Suvero, transformed it into an open studio and exhibition space for artists and a neighborhood park for local residents. Among the sculptures on exhibit are FOLLY: tree wood by Toshihiro Oki Architect P.C., do it (outside), and Beyond the Hedges by Heather Rowe. Tree wood is an interesting installation that creates a dialogue between built structures and systems and the irregular and organic. It is about the ideals of nature and man-made structures, such as the wood and chandelier coexisting in our crowded world without interrupting each other.

The park is also a venue for performances, outdoor cinema, farmers' market and fitness classes.
