The Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan lies west of midtown between 30th and 59th Streets from 8th Avenue to the Hudson River. In the 19th century, it was characterized by poverty, street gangs and rows of slum tenements. Today, the neighborhood, which is also called Clinton or simply midtown west, has evolved into an exciting area in Manhattan. Hells' Kitchen's diverse immigrant heritage has led to some great ethnic cuisine and the hardships of the past led to a strong neighborhood community. It is home to Restaurant Row, the name given to 46th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues. The street is lined by scores of international food outlets. Restaurant Row is frequented by theatre goers and locals alike.
