Summer Streets

"Conductorcise"

For the second year, Summer Streets return to Manhattan. Almost 7 miles of Manhattan roads were closed to traffic from 7 AM to 1 PM today, transforming the streets into an exciting and refreshing public space for walking, biking, running and playing. Main cross-town streets remained open to vehicles crossing the car-free zone. I made these images on Park Avenue. The roads closed to traffic but open to pedestrians and bikers were Park Avenue below 72nd Street, and connecting streets from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park. There were also a number of family-friendly activities at different "rest stops." Summer Streets will run again on August 15 and 22 at the same time. The warmly received road closing is made possible by the NYC Department of Transportation and other sponsors.
