Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Fare Hike

The New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority's fare hike went into effect at midnight on March 3, including a monthly ticket increase for Long Island Rail Road riders of as much as 15.3 percent, depending on destination and trip type, along with a quarter increase in most subway and bus fares. LIRRfares rose an average of 9 percent, along with Metro-North train fares. Subway and bus rides increased from $2.25 to $2.50 for a single ride, and express buses will cost $6. Other notable increases include a seven-day MetroCard hitting $30, up from $29, and a monthly MetroCard going up from $104 to $112. Customers are now charged $1 for every new MetroCard they purchase, and tolls have also gone up. Toll increases range from $4.80 to $5.33 for E-ZPass customers and from $6.50 to $7.50 for cash customers.

Doyers Street in Chinatown Will Appear In "The Amazing Spider-Man 2"

This part of Chinatown served as a set for the upcoming film "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" last Friday night. Lanterns and extra banners with Chinese characters were strung up over Doyers Street. The popular Nom Wah Tea Parlor, in particular was also used for the filming of the movie sequel. Based on the Marvel comic book character and directed by Marc Webb, the movie will star Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx, and is due to be released in April next year. 

Nom Wah is the first dim sum parlor in Chinatown since 1920. In pop culture, Nom Wah has appeared in numerous movies and television shows including "Reversal of Fortune," "Premium Rush," "All Good Things, Quid Pro Quo", "Third Rock," "Law and Order" and "Smash."

Original Iwo Jima Monument at The 590 Madison Avenue Sculpture Garden

Bonhams, one of the world's largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques  exhibited the original Iwo Jima Monument at the 590 Madison Avenue Sculpture Garden adjoining its auction galleries. Created by Felix de Weldon, the large-scale, bronze-coated, cement and plaster sculpture was the 1945 World War II forerunner of the magnificent United States Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. This piece was offered for private sale by Bonhams in the Feb. 22, 2013, World War II: the Pacific Theater auction. The monument was created to commemorate the raising of an American flag by five Marines and a Navy Corpsman on Mount Suribachi as Allied Forces struggled to capture the Japanese-held island in February of 1945. News photographer Joe Rosenthal caught the scene, and his Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph inspired de Weldon.

11th Annual Orchid Show Opens at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx

Yesterday, the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx opened its doors to the 11th annual Orchid Show. Thousands of brilliantly colored orchids in various forms are on display throughout the galleries of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. This show is considered the largest exhibition of its kind in the United States. In this year's show, trees from the NYBG's grounds that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy are incorporated in the display. In addition to the orchid show, there are talks, classes, demonstrations, music and even Orchid Evenings at the New York Botanical Garden. The Orchid Show runs through April 22.

Roman Blown Glass

These are some of the beautiful blown glass objects on permanent display at the Greek and Roman Galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Glassblowing is a glassforming technique of inflating molten glass into a bubble using a blowpipe or blow tube. This technique was developed in the Syro-Palestinian region in the early first century B.C. and is believed to have come to Rome with craftsmen and slaves after the area's annexation to the Roman world in 64 B.C.
