Black Friday

Black Friday shoppers were out in full force today in Manhattan. At Macy's flagship store in Herald Square, Black Friday brought a festive scene. The store opened at midnight and the line of out-of-towners and locals was long outside the popular store. The term “Black Friday” was coined in the 1960s to mark the kickoff to the holiday shopping season. In the olden days, accounting records were kept by hand, and red ink was used to indicate a loss, and black a profit. Stores hype Black Friday and offer discounts to encourage shoppers to spend.
