Empire State Building Lit Up In Colors Of The Philippine Flag For Super Typhoon Victims
The iconic Empire State Building is lit up in red (bottom), blue (middle), yellow (fins and halo) and white (top), the colors of the Philippine flag to raise awareness and support for the typhoon-ravaged country. The tower was lit up in Philippine flag colors for two consecutive nights (November 15-16). Last week, super typhoon Haiyan (named Yolanda in the Philippines) hit the Philippines with reports of more than 5,000 estimated casualties, and an excess of 9 million people affected. It was one of the most devastating storms ever to make landfall on a number of counts. Because the Philippines sits on the western rim of the Pacific Ocean, the most active area for tropical cyclones, the country gets more than its share of disasters. Just a month ago, a strong earthquake hit the central Bohol and Cebu provinces. The recovery effort from that earthquake was still underway before Haiyan came. Please help the victims in their efforts to rebuild their lives. Here is a link to a CNN article for a list of ways to help.

In Remembrance: September 11, 2001
The red-white-and-blue lighting of the Empire State Building and the annual beams of light that mark roughly where the twin towers once stood called "Tribute in Light" are two of the most prominent visual memorial to those who were lost on September 11, 2001. The lights go on at sunset on September 11 and will go off at dawn on September 12. We will never forget.

The Empire State Building Top Tier Lights Up In Rainbow Colors In Honor Of Pride Week 2013
This weekend, the top tier of the Empire State Building lights up in rainbow colors with sparkle in halo in honor of New York City Pride Week. The iconic building is privately owned by Empire State Building Company, L.L.C. (ESBC); it is not owned or run by the City or State of New York. According to the Empire State Building official website, its official Lighting Partner program was established after the prior managing agent was replaced in August 2006. Its policies and practices are subject to change in accord with ownership's preferences. In November 2012, the Empire State Building (ESB) replaced its traditional light fixtures as part of its 21st century renovation and unveiled its new, state-of-the-art dynamic LED lighting system, designed by Philips Color Kinetics (PCK). This system, which is unique to ESB, allows customized light capabilities from a palette of over 16 million colors in limitless combinations along with effects previously not possible such as ripples, cross-fades, sparkles, chasers, sweeps, strobes and bursts. In addition to greater control and management of the lighting, the new computerized system delivers superior light and vibrancy levels in real-time, unlike the previous floodlights. The new lighting system minimizes light spill, ensuring that light is focused on the façade and mast, while providing enough light to allow the building to be seen from anywhere in New York City. This feature not only respects the night sky, but the building's neighbors as well.
The rainbow colors reflect the diversity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and a symbol of pride and solidarity. Pride week festivities kicked off yesterday, culminating in the Pride March tomorrow. New York City is the U.S. city with the largest gay population.

World's Largest Menorah
Lighting of the 32-foot-high, gold-colored, 4,000-pound steel menorah took place last night at the Grand Army Plaza (Fifth Avenue and West 59th Street, across the street from The Plaza hotel). The event kicked off the annual Jewish Festival of Lights. The menorah is billed the world's largest, and is the work of Israeli contemporary artist Yaakov Agam. The menorah has nine genuine oil lamps, eight for the straight menorah branch, and one for the helper candle.
Hanukkah is a celebration of the historic victory of the Jews against the Syrian-Greek regime that was a threat to Jewish life. When the Jews entered Jerusalem and their Holy Temple to light the menorah, the small amount of oil used miraculously lasted eight days and nights.
The Empire State Building top tiers are lit in blue/white/blue in honor of Hanukkah. The New York City metropolitan area is home to the largest Jewish community outside Israel. Happy Hanukkah!
